France, 1692.

Desperate to escape the nobility, Catherine stows aboard the merchant ship Atlantis, unaware the captain's illegal privateering could see the crew hanged for piracy. Captain Archer is a man haunted by his past, and after several years of hardship, his crew are threatening mutiny.

Seeking an ally, Archer puts his trust in the ship's young navigator, Harry Kirk. But as Harry begins to fall for Catherine, he finds his loyalties shifting. Meanwhile, escaped slave Serafine hides in the hold, praying to her Voudon gods beneath the sea.

But Atlantis is bound for Port Royal, Jamaica, a town on the verge of destruction at the hands of the sea that sustains it...
